This position is an entry level forestry technician and timber stand improvement specialist with Better Meadows & Woodlands, LLP. The successful candidate will possess/will master a wide range of skills as listed in the qualifications section. Compensation to increase with the candidate’s increased knowledge, skills, and abilities. This position is intended to work as part of a skilled team to accomplish landowner goals, such as invasive species control, tree planting, timber stand improvement, etc.
Responsibilities:
Invasive species control including chemical applications and mechanical removalWork with herbicide: accurately and safely mix and apply herbicide, using appropriate PPE
Chainsaw operation to achieve TSI/Habitat Management: forest thinning, crop tree release; timber marking; patch clearcuts; grassland establishment; wetland enhancement
Interact with landowners in a professional mannerMaintain equipment and tools: chainsaws maintained and sharp; chemical application equipment cleaned, maintained, and calibrated; keep machinery and vehicles up to date on maintenance
Other duties as assigned
Major Challenges:
This is physical work that requires the team member to operate a chainsaw, backpack sprayer, or other hand tools in a forested setting. Team members must be capable of traversing various surfaces including untamed forestland. While team members will usually be part of a crew on site, they should be comfortable working on their own.This position will consist of year-round field work. Team members must be able to dress for all weather types. Team members must be able to lift 50 lbs. and carry 50 lbs. on their back for several hours.
Performance Evaluation Criteria:
Probationary (3mo) and AnnualTree/Shrub IDPesticide License/Trained Applicator status
Chainsaw safety/efficiency
Accuracy of herbicide applications
Speed of herbicide applications
Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to identify common invasive species of Ohio
Ability to operate backpack and hand sprayers
Ability to operate a chainsaw and other hand tools
Current driver's license/must also be insurable under BM&W, LLP auto policy
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to identify common trees/shrubs/herbaceous plants and grasses of Ohio
Ohio Pesticide applicators License with Commercial Core, Aquatic Pest, and Forest Pest ControlAbility to operate backpack and hand sprayers
Ability to operate a chainsaw and other hand tools
Current driver's license/must also be insurable under BM&W, LLP auto policy
Compensation:
$15.00-$25.00 hourly
Major holidays paid
$500.00 sign on bonus after 3-month probationary period
